This chapter examines how energy data is being shared. Because energy data can be used to indicate or infer many individual socio-economic characteristics, they are considered useful to many different institutions. These differences give data different meanings, and each of those meanings takes on its own valueValue. Because data is valuable, energy actorsActors can trade it, steal it, and misuseMisuse it. Consequently, although many government agencies around the world are strictly managing the sharing and distributionDistribution of energy data due to privacyPrivacy issues, some companies are inevitably profiting from selling energy data to third parties. Prioritizing energy efficiencyEnergy efficiency over dataSecurity securityData security empowers profit at the cost to privacyPrivacy. This chapter focuses on individual’s right to collect one’s data from spreading in the hidden process of data selling by energy companies.
