The installation of smart metersSmart meters is a controversial topic as some countries such as NorwayNorway and France have decided to make them mandatory for all households—other places, there are options to opt out but there are economic penalties, which means households with larger income can more easily afford to opt out than low-income households. This holds both justice implications and implications for the quality of the data. In this chapter, we discuss privacyPrivacy problems related to energy data, which can be used to determine one’s employment status, number of residents, lifestyleLifestyle, religious behaviorReligious behavior among other social characteristics.
