Excipients are materials specifically added to the formulation of an active pharmaceutical ingredient, the active drug, to assist during manufacture of the formulation, to help its storage characteristics or improve its acceptability and utility in clinical use. They should be regarded separately from ingredients which are inadvertently inserted into a formulation during manufacture; these are contaminants. Excipients are not biologically inert and are strictly regulated during the development of prescribed medications.
