From Crisis Innovation to Lasting Reform: The Role of Telehealth in Equitable and Sustainable Healthcare
摘要
Telehealth holds tremendous promise in reshaping healthcare delivery by breaking down traditional barriers of distance, cost, and time. It can particularly benefit patients in rural or underserved areas who face long travel times or limited access to specialists, as well as low-income individuals and families who may struggle with transportation, childcare, or inflexible work schedules. By offering care that is convenient, flexible, and often more affordable, telehealth improves follow-up, adherence, and early intervention, factors that are critical for chronic disease management, mental health care, women’s health, and pediatrics (Curfman et al., Pediatrics 148(3):e2021053129, 2021; Curfman et al., Pediatrics 149(3):e2021056035, 2022; Chen et al., J Gen Intern Med 38(11):2613–2620, 2023; Tilhou et al., JAMA Netw Open 7(1):e2347686, 2024; Schwamm et al., Circulation [Internet]. 135(7). At its core, telehealth represents not just a technological innovation, but an equity-driven opportunity to expand high-quality care to populations who have historically been left behind.
