With the increasing diversity of the United States, it is becoming more important than ever for health care providers to educate themselves on providing sound, equitable care to people of many backgrounds. Over the past 30 years, there has been a shift from cultural competence toward the principles of cultural humility—a life-long commitment toward self-reflection and engagement with one’s patients, communities, and themselves (Tervalon and Murray-García, J Health Care Poor Underserved, 9:117–125, 1998). Throughout this chapter, we will discuss the history of cultural humility and review several examples of disparities in care that have come about as a result of lack of culturally humble care. We will then explore various innovations in medical education, diagnostic practices, and clinical care that have been created with the principles of cultural humility in mind.

摘要
