This chapter sets out to define a framework for a commons-oriented approach to cultural value. The rationale for this is to propose an alternative to neoliberal framings of cultural value, which have been explored in Chapter 2 , and currently determine much of the language of cultural policy. Instrumental aims, from economic revenue to wellbeing, are often invoked as the key arguments for expenditure in culture; following the arguments made in Chapter 2 , this chapter aims to surface the political project embedded in this kind of discussion of cultural value, emphasizing its role in contributing to broader political agendas.
