In today’s digital world, where higher education is increasingly relying on online platforms, barrier-free education is becoming crucial. This issue is especially relevant in Ukraine, where the number of veterans returning to education with different needs is growing. Refactoring the department’s website is becoming a strategic imperative that enhances its reputation, expands its audience, and increases engagement among higher education students. This article presents the research and successful implementation of a strategy for refactoring the department’s website to ensure its compliance with digital accessibility standards, in particular DSTU EN 301 549:2022 (WCAG 2.1 Level AA). An in-depth analysis of the information environment was conducted, which included the study of its components, identification of user categories, detailed analysis of brand identity, creation of personas, surveys, analysis of technical infrastructure, and audit of the department’s website. Based on the data obtained, a refactoring model was formed and implemented, which included redesigning graphic elements and updating key functions of the site. The results of the study confirm that the consistent application of the selected methodologies allowed us to create an accessible, convenient, visually appealing and effective information environment. Despite certain challenges, including limited resources (time, technical staff), the recommendations, including constant monitoring of accessibility, expanding functionality (chatbot, AI), staff training, and improving search, will ensure the dynamic development and inclusiveness of the educational space of any department.
