The Impact of Formative Online Practice Quizzes on Undergraduate Engineering Students’ Success in ESP
摘要
The curriculum of Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies includes content-based and task-based ESP (English as a foreign language) courses in the first year of undergraduate engineering programmes. During English language studies, the focus is on learning professional terminology related to engineering subject fields, along with the development of all four language skills, mainly through professionally oriented texts and tailor-made tasks and activities. Within the framework of a blended approach, academic staff have developed formative online quizzes with automatic marking after each topic, as well as a paper-based summative test at the end of the ESP course. The research had a twofold aim: 1) to investigate engineering students’ attitudes towards formative online practice quizzes with automatic marking and 2) to find out if formative online practice quizzes enrich their technical vocabulary in the subject field. The results of the research imply that formative online quizzes can improve students’ success and lead to students’ satisfaction with acquiring complicated technical terms in a foreign language.
