This book focuses on the employment experiences of Black disabled women living with the sickle cell condition. In this chapter, an introduction is given to the background of how the concept of quietism was developed from research that was conducted with women living with sickle cell about their employment experiences. Research had been undertaken before the pandemic from 2017 to 2020 and funded by the Disability Research for Independent Living and Learning (DRILL) and the Big Lottery Fund, in order to understand barriers and enablers to employment for Black disabled people. It explains why the intersectionality of experiences of discrimination became important to understand for Black disabled women and how those became gendered.
