Introduction: From Minifesto to Queer Politics
摘要
This chapter is an introduction to the present book on queer activism in Iceland from the 1920s to 2000s. The chapter begins with an analysis of a “queer document,” a handwritten artifact discovered in Reykjavík’s Municipal Archive during research on S-78, the Icelandic gay and lesbian organization. This document, which references queer activism, visibility, and knowledge emerging after the 2000s in Iceland, serves as the foundation for developing the book’s theoretical framework, which we briefly discussed. The chapter offers an overarching reflection on the historical and political development of queer activism within a broader context, examining various approaches, strategies, historical ruptures, and the nonlinear trajectories of queer movements in both pre- and post-Stonewall contexts. The chapter also critically reflects on the politics of gender and sexual exceptionalism in Iceland, posing questions about the futurity/futurities of queer activism. These questions are addressed in Chap. 9 , where we conclude our arguments after providing a historical account of queer activism in Iceland. Additionally, it outlines the book’s structure and introduces research aims, scope, data collection, limitations, the historicist approach, and methodological framework alongside a reflection on the researchers’ positionality.
