Genocide Against Muggles as a Case of Subaltern Genocide?
摘要
This chapter examines whether genocidal violence against Muggles can be understood as subaltern genocide, meaning genocide carried out by a group that has itself experienced historical oppression. The chapter outlines theories of subaltern genocide, including the role of humiliation, fear, and memories of past violence in motivating formerly oppressed groups to adopt genocidal ideologies and strategies against real and perceived oppressors. Drawing mainly on the Fantastic Beasts original screenplays, this chapter documents the long history of Muggle persecution of witches and wizards, including witch hunts and systematic violence, and analyzes Grindelwald’s political movement as a case of subaltern genocide. The chapter concludes by cautioning that recognizing historical victimization must not be used as a justification for genocide.
