This study explores the negative impacts of social media, acknowledging its adverse effects, namely compulsive use and news overload with their consequences, namely negative state of mind and cyber-aggression. Based on a survey on 657 Instagram users, we test the research model using structural equation modelling. The findings show that compulsive Instagram use is linked to cyber-aggression through news overload, anxiety, and depression. First, compulsive Instagram use is positively associated with news overload. Second, news overload is positively associated with anxiety and depression. Third, anxiety and depression are positively associated with cyber-aggression. Fourth, the connection between anxiety and cyber-aggression is stronger than that of depression. Importantly, the present study adds value to information systems research by presenting a conceptual model rooted in the Stimulus-Organism-Response framework.

摘要
