Chapter 7 described the declarations, regulations, codes of ethics, and accountability mechanisms crafted for AI systems over recent years. Those tools have contributed to instil an ethical ethos into the AI field, but we also need specific laws and policies to guide AI developments. However, multiple and powerful political and economic interests conspire against an effective regulation for AI, as companies and—albeit somewhat obscurely—countries race frantically to dominate the AI system. We thus need to strengthen the remedies already described. Drawing from Norbert Wiener, Louise Amoore, Shannon Vallor, and Thilo Hagendorff, this chapter argues that we need a radical change in our personal behaviour and the actions of political and economic institutions in order to make the AI system work in collaboration with human beings and societies. This shift primarily requires enforcing the principles proclaimed by recent AI declarations, legislations, and codes of ethics, enhancing them with a real ethical conduct driven by the cultivation of specific ethical virtues.

摘要
