This conclusion chapter synthesizes the findings of the book, which examines media representations and audience reception of female subjectivity on the Chinese reality dating show Chinese Dating with the Parents. Drawing on textual analysis of the show, as well as texts-in-action viewing sessions and in-depth interviews with 23 young, highly educated women in Xi’an, this chapter restates the central argument and highlights its theoretical and empirical contributions. The book conceptualises a Chinese postfeminist sensibility, shaped by the historical legacy of state feminism, the Four-Selves Spirit Campaign, and transnational circulation of postfeminist discourses alongside neoliberal consumer culture. Methodologically, the study combines media analysis with audience reception, offering a nuanced understanding of real-time viewing practices through observations during texts-in-action viewing sessions. This chapter also reflects on limitations including pandemic constraints and the homogeneity of the participant group. Overall, it situates Chinese postfeminism in a shifting social and media landscape, highlighting the tensions between female empowerment, structural inequality, and everyday negotiations of female subjectivity.
