Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in Language Education: Current Trends and Perspectives
摘要
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has been gaining a proliferting interest in language education. Education paradigms, influenced by GenAI, have been changing rapidly. Recent research has investigated three main trends that shape language classroom practices. First, AI tools enable the provision of immediate detailed feedback on students’ performance. In other words, learners receive instant, objective comments which support self-assessment and language modification on an autonomous basis. Second, GenAI creates new opportunities for sustained exposure to the target language. Learners can engage in open ended dialogues, rehearse tasks, explore content at different levels, and access a wider range of input that matches individual learner variables. This personalized learning modality shows the potential to improve interaction competence and build a more flexible command of language. The third trend concerns AI-assisted assessment. Although a few experts have raised concerns about the integrity of AI-assissted assessment, this innovative approach indicates beneficial for teachers and learners in terms of practicality and rater reliability. Despite promising results from recent studies, remaining concerns about validity, fairness, and transparency require further investigations. This chapter aims to contributes to provide additional resources to the existing literature by critically reviewing the current trends and concepts in AI-assisted language teaching and learning. Although AI-assisted language teaching and learning has bridged the gaps between language education and technology. The remaining concerns may require interdisciplinary research. The ongoing evolution of AI will hopefully develop further, suggesting additional innovations in language education.
