This chapter examines the central role of parents in intensive CBT-E for adolescents with eating disorders. Parents are engaged throughout the therapeutic process, from assessment to the final stages, given their legal responsibility for their child’s care, their strong influence on treatment outcomes, and their position within the home environment. The chapter emphasizes creating an optimal family environment that supports adolescent recovery. Therapists help parents let go of guilt, adopt a constructive “helper” role rather than a controlling stance, and shift their communication towards warmth, empathy, and collaboration. Guidance includes education on eating disorders, replacing coercive or critical strategies with supportive approaches, and fostering stress-free family activities that re-establish normal life beyond the disorder. Attention is also given to parents’ own well-being and to modifying the home environment to reduce triggers that reinforce disordered behaviours. Practical strategies are detailed for supporting CBT-E procedures, addressing disordered eating styles, and managing high-stress situations. Barriers to parental involvement, such as logistical, cultural, or mental health difficulties, are acknowledged and addressed. Ultimately, the chapter underscores that parents are not the cause of eating disorders but can be essential allies in recovery.

摘要
