This chapter starts with an explanation of the formal ad hoc practices of transitional justice. After the evaluation of these formal practices, the kind of mechanisms grassroots actors prioritize in the Kurdish conflict is explained. The justice demands for domestic trials regarding legal accountability, truth recovery in the form of knowing what happened, exhumations and reburials, and official apologies are categorized. The chapter contextualizes which measures of transitional justice are prioritized and what they mean in the context of the Kurdish conflict. It moves beyond framing demands and needs for justice by including grassroots actors’ reflections on formal procedures relevant to transitional justice. The chapter delves into what type of criminal proceedings the grassroots actors advocate for (domestic or international trials), which perpetrators are to be punished (offenders or politicians), what types of truth are prioritized (legal or political truth), and the spiritual and cultural meaning of reburial.
