Iceland’s Security: A New European Dimension

Iceland’s security rests on NATO and U.S. guarantees, but rising threats and President Trump’s unpredictability, together with his renewed quest to acquire Greenland, have pushed Reykjavík to diversify its security partnerships. Security and defence cooperation with European states has intensified, with EU-Iceland negotiations on a Security and Defence Partnership awaiting signature and a referendum on resuming EU accession negotiations scheduled for August 2026.
