This chapter presents Slovenia’s engagement in EU security and defence, highlighting a large gap between its declarative approach and reality, usually evidenced by the lack of consistent leadership and hence constrained capabilities. It explores defence spending trends, societal perceptions and strategic ambivalence, situating Slovenia’s role within broader EU security dynamics. There are both challenges and opportunities for Slovenia to enhance its credibility through political will, niche contributions and proactive coalition-building. Using the traffic light analogy, Slovenia can be categorised within the ‘green’/‘yellow’ range, reflecting an overall low to moderate threat perception among the Slovenian public, depending on the type of threat.
