Justice: On the Importance to Recognize Dignity and Social Equity as Two Sides of the Same Coin
摘要
The article examines the intrinsic relationship between individual dignity and social equity as inseparable dimensions of justice, with particular attention to German–Namibian relations and the enduring legacy of colonialism. Drawing on the tradition of humanist Marxism, it argues that genuine justice depends on both the safeguarding of individual autonomy and the realization of social equity. The analysis moves beyond reductive approaches that confine justice to historical restitution or the management of collective guilt, and instead foregrounds political responsibility for shaping present and future social conditions. By analysing the social preconditions of dignity—including civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights—the chapter demonstrates why neither authoritarian socialism nor neoliberal capitalism can provide an adequate foundation for justice. It concludes by proposing principles for academic cooperation between German and Namibian scholars and institutions that prioritise Namibian agency in defining research agendas and promote partnerships oriented toward creating more just conditions in both societies. Engagement with colonial history is thus framed not as an end in itself, but as a necessary basis for accountability and sustained, substantive collaboration.
