Mentorship, Collaboration, and Relationship Building
摘要
This chapter outlines the concept of mentorship as well as key research and theory concerning definitions of mentorship, including how mentorship creates knowledge, mentorship challenges, and effective and ineffective mentorship practices. I connect the lived experiences of the eight participants and myself to what research has shown about effective mentorship, particularly as it relates to the professional growth of female academics and leaders. I include discussion of so-called conflict entrepreneurs and how they can create roadblocks for new leaders. I also examine what research has shown about mentorship challenges for women leaders and leaders of color, as well as the documented risks of mentorship relationships for these populations. To further understand the power of mentorship collaborations and relationship building, I include research and reflection on the long history of the horse-human bond to better understand learning through collaboration, listening, and mutual respect. The complex cultural, personal, and evolutionary bond between people and horses makes them ideal partners for learning about and developing our leadership selves.
