Within the last 10 years, there have been significant advance in our knowledge about the molecular features of melanocytic lesions. Due to their clinical significance, many of these changes have already been codified in the latest WHO classification of cutaneous neoplasms. This introductory chapter includes a short history of these discoveries and summarizes some of the most relevant changes proposed in the classification.
