This chapter highlights how these areas became a cornerstone of the country’s conservation strategy. Through documentary review and data analysis by Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the geographic distribution of protected areas is mapped to contextualise with ecological characteristics (orography, demography, ecosystems, and biodiversity), but also with historical and social development.
