Program accreditation is one of the most important responsibilities of a program director. Maintaining accreditation refers to how a program director ensures an optimal educational program and holds the program to the published standards of performance. Coincidentally, with this, surgical graduates themselves are also held to a standard of performance to be considered eligible for Board Certification—an important part of becoming a surgeon. This chapter outlines the interaction between programs and the ACGME and ABS to train surgeons in the future.
