Surgical residents play a pivotal role in education in academic medicine, particularly teaching junior residents and medication students. There are mandates that residents be prepared for their teaching role and also that they perform a number of procedures as teaching assistants. In this chapter, resident-as-teacher programs and teaching assistance cases in surgery training are discussed. We also provide advice for those residents who want to build an academic career in surgical education.
