Scholarly activity is a requirement by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for every United States general surgery residency. Boyer’s Framework for scholarly activity categorizes scholarship into four broad categories: the scholarship of discovery, the scholarship of integration, the scholarship of application, and the scholarship of teaching. However, the best method for cultivating scholarly activity in general surgery residency is unclear. Furthermore, scholarly activity is an often-cited programmatic area of noncompliance for graduate medical education. To help facilitate scholarly activity curricula and opportunities for general surgery residents, we review the definition of scholarly activity, share best practices for cultivating productivity in graduate medical education, provide mechanism for measurement and reporting of scholarly activity, describe approaches for designing scholarly activity experiences, and explore barriers to success.

摘要
