The high-intensity impulsive load produced by breaking waves will often need to be considered during the design of many different types of coastal and offshore structures such as seawalls or breakwaters. Due to its extreme nature, many attempts have been made since the introduction of Goda’s equation to improve the prediction of maximum forces on vertical walls that are susceptible to wave breaking. Beyond coastal engineering, the quantification of impact forces is also important in the aeronautics, shipbuilding, offshore oil and gas, and marine renewable energy industries. In this chapter, we will briefly introduce a few alternative procedures that can be used to calculate forces from breaking or broken waves on walls.

摘要
