Religion and Entrepreneurship: How Magical-Religious Beliefs and Practices Influence Entrepreneurial Success in Senegal’s Informal Sector
摘要
This study explores the relationship between magical-religious beliefs and practices (MRBP) and entrepreneurial success within Senegal’s informal sector. The research seeks to analyze how these sociocultural factors influence business outcomes. The contribution of this study is threefold: (1) by focusing on the informal sector, it addresses an empirical gap regarding sociocultural influences on entrepreneurship in Africa; (2) it evaluates entrepreneurial success through both financial and non-financial indicators; and (3) it mobilizes a qualitative methodology combining semi-structured interviews and ethnographic non-participant observation. Findings highlight the deep cultural embedding of MRBP in Senegalese society, including maraboutage, fetishism, and witchcraft. While many entrepreneurs perceive these practices as supportive of success, their influence is heterogeneous and context dependent.
