Brazil, Where the Manganese Comes from*: The Strange Journey of Charles R. Eastman, ONI Agent 139
摘要
Surely the most unlikely member of the AMNH intelligence-gathering cadre was the scholarly, middle-aged ichthyologist, Charles REastman, Charles R.. Eastman (Fig. 8.1, left). A Harvard-trained undergraduate who specialized in fossil fishes (especially early Devonian sharksDevonian sharks), Eastman earned his doctorate in Germany, rather than in the United States. He was an accomplished linguist who spoke German fluently, as well as Spanish and French and, after his stay inBrazil BrazilBahía (Brazil) from June, 1917 to April, 1918, apparently a decent Portuguese. In contradistinction to C. P. Snow’s premise which began this book, Eastman was also a humanist and widely admired as a Greek and Roman classics scholar. Eastman held a number of prestigious positions, including an instructorship at his alma mater, and a post at the Carnegie MuseumCarnegie Museum (Pittsburgh) in Pittsburgh, before he initiated his career at the AMNH.
