The outbreak of World War I affected the Latin American research program at the American Museum of Natural History in several distinct ways. First, the neutral stance of many Latin American nations posed difficulties for U.S. researchers who hoped to work in the region, as Washington politicians were politically aligned with the Allies. After the United States Declaration of War in 1917, this situation grew even more fraught, with outright antagonism against the United States making the process of receiving Latin American research permits problematic. As the individual experiences of several AMNH scientists presented in the chapters which follow will show, those who managed to get to the region during the War encountered either hostility or decidedly pro-German attitudes from several Latin American governments.

摘要
