Policing in the United States is a dangerous profession. The number of police officers killed in the line of duty in America over the last few decades has ranged between 100 and more than 500 annually. The most common causes of these deaths were vehicle accidents and violent encounters, primarily involving a firearm. Since 2015 and the commencement of anti-police sentiment fueled by the Black Lives Matter and ‘Defund the Police’ movements, the number of police officers killed in ambushes and unprovoked attacks has increased dramatically. Relevant data and policy implications, including revisions to tactical training, will be delineated.
