Police Brutality and Excessive Force in the United States: Evaluating National Data and Examining Criminological Explanations
摘要
According to the media and many community advocates in the United States, allegations have been made that police officers across America participate in acts of brutality and excessive use of force on a regular basis, particularly when the suspect is a member of a minority or under-represented group. These assertions, promoted since 2015, have resulted in numerous calls for government officials to dramatically reduce budgetary funding for law enforcement agencies. There is, however, detailed empirical data exceeding ten years that will allow comprehensive insight into the use of force by police in the United States. In addition, a related analysis of police use of force by race will permit further examination and understanding. This investigation will additionally enable theoretical assessment and result in criminological explanations for acts of brutality and other police criminality from an American perspective.
