Application of LCA for Pharmaceuticals: Lessons from a Ten-Year Programme in AstraZeneca
摘要
AstraZeneca (AZ) has developed a comprehensive product life cycle assessment (LCA) programme to support its sustainability goals. The programme aims to generate robust, product-specific environmental data to inform reduction strategies and corporate reporting. Using ISO 14040/44-aligned methods, the LCAs cover > 90% of AZ’s commercial portfolio by 2024 revenue. These studies integrate primary data from operations and suppliers and are updated regularly to reflect system changes, such as packaging format updates. Results from the programme reveal diverse environmental hotspots across product types and life cycle stages, with solvents, energy use, and distribution as key drivers. The Product Sustainability Index (PSI) uses LCA to enable internal benchmarking and prioritisation. The programme demonstrates how LCA can guide emissions reduction, improve scope 3 reporting, and support broader applications such as clinical trials assessments.
