Practical and Symbolic Values in the Architectural Reuse of Existing Building Envelope Components and Assemblies
摘要
Reusing existing buildings is a practice as ancient as architecture itself. Yet, both historically and today, the reuse potential of many buildings, whether in whole or in parts (e.g., components and assemblies), is often overlooked at the end of their life cycle. While architectural conservation safeguards material continuity, demolition risks erasing the identity, memory, and craftsmanship embedded in buildings and their parts. At the dawn of twenty-first century, in an effort to uphold environmental and cultural values, the planned deconstruction and reuse of existing building components have become the focus of experimental-creative practices and scientific inquiry within the broader context of sustainable construction. However, the potential of conservation practices and value-oriented methodologies in informing the design with reclaimed building components remains largely unexplored. The design process for reuse requires a qualitative approach, aiming to retain the original form while enhancing technical, functional, and aesthetic aspects, thus blending cultural relevance with modern functionality. This paper first presents a conceptual approach to the categorization of recognized practical (associated with ecological and functional) and symbolic (associated with cultural and experiential) values of reuse as an intersection of the existing heritage values. Second, the analysis of selected examples of reuse of non-structural existing building envelope components and assemblies in contemporary architectural settings in Europe, highlights the presence of practical and symbolic values, discusses the balance of these values, and demonstrates how these values are transmitted throughout the reuse design process. The integration of values embodied in existing components into new architectural contexts demonstrates the convergence of “valuations”, “valorizations”, and design as a meaningful arhitectural approach. The paper identifies key motives for reuse of existing building parts at the intersection of heritage values and explores new transformative potentials and aesthetic expressions within the architectural reuse discourse. The conceptual findings may contribute to further research on the recognition of architectural design principles that center on reuse.
