Design - particularly spatial design - is explored as a potential lever for the conservation, transmission, and sharing of tangible and intangible heritage. The island of Djerba, recently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, represents an emblematic case for investigating how design may contribute to enhancing architectural and cultural heritage. This project seeks to examine the role of design and design education in the preservation and dissemination of Djerba’s tangible urban and architectural legacy, while also integrating aspects of its intangible heritage. The aim is to propose collaborative academic initiatives, in partnership with tourism stakeholders and institutions such as UNESCO, to conceptualize real and virtual media capable of creating immersive spatial journeys. These initiatives are intended to include the development of interactive cartographies and both 2D and 3D real and virtual itineraries to highlight the socio-cultural and economic dimensions of Djerba’s architectural heritage. Through the application of digital tools, the project envisions the virtual reconstruction of architectural spaces (in 3D) guided by detailed cartographic references, offering immersive and emotionally resonant scenographic experiences. This approach aims to explore how design may serve as a powerful and innovative pathway for preserving and promoting heritage, while also fostering meaningful and engaging experiences for visitors.
