The civil use of the properties of the atomic nucleus spans a wide area of different applications: nuclear reactors in power stations for electricity generation or on board ships for their propulsion, different medical applications. Future applications currently under investigation include fusion reactors, rocket propulsion and the transmutation of the vast amount of radioactive waste, having accumulated over the many years of usage and to be generated in the future.
