This paper explores the lived experiences of Iraqi Kurdish migrants in the United Kingdom. It examines the challenges faced by a group of Iraqi Kurds due to limited language access and unfamiliar cultural experiences, and how these challenges affect their community interactions and social cohesion. Additionally, the paper investigates the coping mechanisms employed by this group to overcome these obstacles. The data were collected qualitatively using a hybrid narrative approach. The study involved four participants, comprising three males and one female, aged between 35 and 65. Most participants had relocated to the UK during their adulthood. The collected data were analysed thematically, following a Reflexive Thematic Analysis approach. The findings highlight the pivotal roles of language and culture for the study’s participants. Initially, they encountered significant barriers due to their unfamiliarity with the host culture and language, resulting in isolation and restricted access to opportunities. However, these barriers proved to be temporary. Upon reflection and developing a strong desire for integration, the participants actively endeavoured to surmount these challenges. They concentrated on enhancing their language skills and pursuing further education and career advancement. This effort resulted in substantial personal and professional growth, thereby augmenting their sense of respect and value within their communities. While this study offers insights into the language and cultural experiences of migrants and the roles these factors play in fostering integration and social cohesion, it is important to note that such outcomes may not be representative of all migrant experiences. Factors such as unequal access to resources, systemic discrimination, and personal circumstances may hinder others from achieving similar progress. This study highlights the potential for successful adaptation, while also acknowledging the diverse and uneven realities of migrant integration.
