Protesting and the Yellow Jacket Movement: Dissent Within French Cultural Heritage
摘要
Dissent in the form of protest signals the inclusion of values that may not yet belong in a society’s heritage, or values that rebuke those that are protected as heritage. Protesting has stood the test of time as an integral part of French culture, both in terms of its effects and its practice. This chapter examines how protesting can be understood as part of French cultural heritage. It explores whether protesting can be classified as intangible cultural heritage, and how French laws and regulations might support the conception of protesting as heritage in France. As part of its analysis, the chapter also contemplates how human rights and heritage interact and might be at play in a decision to classify protesting as a heritage act in France under the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The chapter’s main case study is the Yellow Vest movement and its effects on the city of Paris.
