Turning disaffection into a determination for wider and long-lasting socio-economic change: participatory approaches to cultural heritage. Voices from Ercolano (Naples, IT)
摘要
The chapter presents an example of innovative heritage-driven solutions that address a community’s deep-rooted and often persisting distrust in each other, in institutions and in what the future holds. The Italian town of Ercolano enjoys an extraordinary location set between Mount Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples, yet a precarious political, social, and economic situation continues to undermine the well-being of the local community and their perception of, let alone engagement with, their heritage assets. The first years of activities of the social enterprise Variabile K, constitute a valid case study to explore the timeframes and steps that can create the conditions for lasting change. Important insights can be gleaned regarding triumphs but also ongoing challenges of grassroots cooperation aiming to change mindsets across all areas of the social fabric in the long run and with local communities increasingly taking in a leading role.
