It’s Personal
摘要
In his chapter, Physician Peter Barnett shares a compassionate story of patient care during his years as an internist/hospitalist. Through the delicate process of first developing good communication with the patient, Barnett outlines how the practice of deep listening and compassion fosters the importance of developing trust in the patient-clinician relationship. He is inspired to deliver excellent patient care and clinical knowledge, whereby the patients have agency and control in their own healthcare. While synthesizing recombinant Factor VIII has resolved this issue for patients who adhere to Jehovah’s Witness precepts, the restriction regarding receiving blood products comes up in other contexts (e.g., any situation in which a whole blood transfusion may be needed). Barnett’s approach, therefore, continues to be illuminating.
