Victimology has a long history and has evolved as a distinct study by absorbing several viewpoints and perspectives from other fields and areas. Although it is still a relatively new field of study and its breadth is gradually growing, the criminal justice system has benefited greatly from the growth of forensic victimology as a more specialised field. Forensic victimology involves a precise, critical, and objective analysis of the victims’ lifestyles, circumstances, events leading to injury, and the nature of the harm or loss. It influences the criminal justice system and legal frameworks, which are essential for ensuring justice for victims, penalising offenders, and promoting rehabilitation. Restorative justice, a recent advancement in victimology and criminology, emphasises repairing the harm caused by criminal acts. The history of victimology, including its definitions, development history, types, theories, viewpoints, impacts on the criminal justice system, and new developments, is the main topic of this introductory chapter. It will also explore the significance of forensic victimology in the context of terrorism and human trafficking.
