In this chapter we exhibit the fundamental concepts of group theory underpinning the coclass theory of finite p-groups. These concepts will be familiar to most readers and we develop them fairly rapidly. We then introduce the main theme of this book – coclass graphs – and present some easy examples for these.

In this chapter we exhibit the fundamental concepts of group theory underpinning the coclass theory of finite p-groups.
