In August 2023, an extreme cloudburst event triggered severe debris flows and flash floods in the Bandal Valley, a tributary catchment of the Song River. The sudden and intense rainfall caused massive slope failures and rapid mobilization of debris, leading to widespread destruction. Three villages within the Bandal Valley, along with Mal Devta village and downstream areas of the Song River, were severely affected. Residential houses, roads, bridges, and agricultural land suffered extensive damage. The disaster resulted in the loss of more than five human lives and significant economic losses. This event highlights the high vulnerability of Himalayan mountain valleys to extreme rainfall events. The incident underscores the need for improved early warning systems, land-use planning, and disaster risk mitigation strategies in fragile mountainous terrains.
