Kedarnath Tragedy
摘要
The Kedarnath tragedy of June 2013 represents one of the worst natural disasters in the Indian Himalaya. The event was triggered by intense cloudbursts and a glacial lake outburst flood, resulting in catastrophic flash floods and debris flows. Extreme rainfall led to the sudden breaching of moraine-dammed lakes and massive sediment mobilization. The Mandakini River valley experienced widespread destruction of settlements, infrastructure, and pilgrimage routes. More than 10,000 people were reported dead or missing, highlighting the scale of human loss. Economic damages amounted to several million INR, severely impacting the regional economy. The disaster exposed high vulnerability due to unplanned development in fragile mountain terrain. The Kedarnath tragedy underscores the need for improved disaster preparedness and sustainable Himalayan development.
