Earthquake Disasters in the Himalaya
摘要
This chapter focuses on earthquake disasters in the Himalaya, a region highly vulnerable due to active tectonics and fragile terrain. It describes the seismotectonic setting created by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates. The chapter reviews major historical earthquake disasters and their spatial distribution across the Himalayan belt. Primary impacts such as ground shaking and surface rupture are discussed alongside secondary disasters like landslides and dam failures. Special emphasis is placed on human casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruption of livelihoods. The role of rapid urbanization, unsafe construction practices, and population concentration in amplifying disaster losses is examined. The chapter also considers institutional and community responses to major earthquake disasters. Finally, it highlights strategies for reducing earthquake disaster risk and enhancing resilience in the Himalaya.
