Classification of Natural Disasters
摘要
This chapter focuses on the systematic classification of natural disasters in the Himalaya within the context of its fragile mountain environment. It presents a conceptual framework for categorizing disasters into terrestrial, geohydrological, and other related hazard groups. Terrestrial disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, and mass movements are examined in relation to active tectonics and steep slopes. Geohydrological disasters, including flash floods, cloudbursts, glacial lake outburst floods, and debris flows, are discussed with reference to climatic and cryospheric influences. The chapter also considers other hazards such as avalanches, forest fires, and extreme weather events. Emphasis is placed on the interlinkages among different hazard types and their cascading effects. The classification highlights spatial variations in disaster occurrence across the Himalayan region. Overall, the chapter provides a foundation for understanding hazard processes, impacts, and risk assessment in the Himalaya.
