Introduction
摘要
This introductory chapter presents an overview of natural disasters in the Himalaya, a region characterized by complex and fragile physiography. It explains how young fold mountains, steep gradients, active tectonics, and diverse climatic regimes heighten disaster vulnerability. The chapter discusses the influence of monsoon rainfall, glacial processes, and river dynamics on hazard occurrence. It introduces major disaster types, including earthquakes, landslides, floods, and avalanches. Attention is given to the interaction between natural processes and increasing human interventions. The chapter outlines the spatial and temporal patterns of disasters across the Himalayan region. It briefly introduces selected case studies that illustrate varied disaster impacts. Finally, it sets the foundation for understanding disaster risk, responses, and resilience-building strategies in the Himalaya.
