The chapter aims at introducing the reader into the Open Innovation field of research by specifically focusing on the benefit of Open Innovation implementation by corporates. As the next chapter will clarify, corporate-led Open Innovation activities have evolved significantly over the past decade. Evidence from recent studies on companies listed among the Fortune Global 500 shows how industry disruption is accelerating, and competitive cycles are shortening. The fear of losing opportunities, together with an increased awareness of the potential benefits of collaborating with innovative and agile businesses (i.e., startups), has encouraged a growing number of large companies to engage in Open Innovation activities.
