Informativity of Water Quality Indicators for NOM
摘要
During drinking water treatment at WTP concentration of natural organic matter (NOM) arising from raw water should be decreased. The following water quality indicators represent NOM: color, PI, COD, TOC. Data from several WTPs showed that after water treatment TOC and COD decreased 1.5–2 times, while PI decreased 2.4–12 times and color 4.5–30 times. This demonstrated higher informative value of TOC as NOM indicator. Several types of online TOC analyzers are based on measurement of optical density of water at 254 nm (D254), which is less interfered by light scattering than D380 or D410 applied in color measurement. However proportionality coefficient SAC254 (used to calculate TOC from D254) is prone to seasonal and spatial variations, and also changes during water treatment. Water analysis for several rivers showed that seasonal and spatial variations of SAC254 were larger than measurement error. Importance of regular recalibration for optical TOC analyzers during the year should be considered in their exploitation.
