Saudi Arabia and Esports—Olympic “Gamewashing”?
摘要
The development of computer games into a competitive sport has been shaped from the outset by digitization, internationalization, the young audience and special marketing features. Olympic sports have been dealing with esports for several years, and in July 2024 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the Olympic Esports Games to Saudi Arabia for 12 years from 2025, although the launch was postponed until 2027 and then cancelled in 2025. The political and economic motives for the initially intended long-term partnership—and subsequent dismissal of it—with the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee are discussed in this chapter. After the host country Saudi Arabia’s previously rather negative experiences with esports and its audience, a special look is taken at the aspects of sportswashing.
